Precious Metal Verifier Updates

An Update from the Sigma Metalytics Team:

Precious Metal Verifiers are now being widely used in the United States (View items here). The positive feedback we have been receiving from dealers and their customers is great, and has provided us with valuable information. This data has been used to further improve the abilities of the PMV in detecting fake or counterfeit metals.

BULLION METAL CHOICES UPDATED AND IMPROVED

We were recently informed that a 10 oz. PAMP gold bar with a 5 mm thick plate of tungsten in the middle was discovered by a dealer in New York by other methods than the PMV. In order to improve detection on these counterfeit bars our gold bullion scale has been updated to check for .9999 gold on a narrow range. This increases the Precious Metal Verifier’s ability to detect tungsten underneath the gold.

The new Metal Data is on the website www.sigmametalytics.com. Click on the details tab and under Latest Software Updates select the Metal Update PDF. It provides instructions for updating the categories on the PMV to increase the sensitivity of the bullion range.

If the User Guide Addendum in your manual is dated October 2015, then you already have the new update on your units and won’t need to make any changes.

IMPROVEMENTS TO GOLD METAL CHOICES

Gold-Krugerrand is now a choice in the Gold category. The Gold-Krugerrand listing is the same as Gold-91.7% 22K balCu scale and has been added to assist users who are unfamiliar with the numerical metal content of the Krugerrand.

CLARIFIED SILVER CHOICES

Earlier this summer we relabeled the Silver 90% categories to Silver 90%US pre1900, Silver 90%US pre1945, and Silver- 90% Coin 1960 (for purer 90% Ag 10% Cu coins). By following the procedure for updating the Bullion Metal Choices, you will also update the PMV to the latest listings for gold and silver choices.

IRON CONTAMINATION IN GOLD

Iron contamination in gold will affect the PMV reading. The ASTM standard B562-95 specifies the amount of iron and other metal impurities allowed in refined gold for a given purity. If gold meets this standard, it will show as consistent with gold on the PMV.

Keep up the good work,

The Sigma Metalytics Team
